Even though they had limited functionality, their novelty, coupled with a relatively low price point (and strategic price reductions during the holidays) made them near-irresistible to consumers. Suddenly, tech companies had access to more personal information than they knew what to do with. In fact, as of last year, there were smart speakers in more than half a billion homes across the world.
