The IOT is COMING: Be Prepared For AWESOMENESS Everywhere
There’s a lot of talk at the moment about IoT or Internet of Things, but it’s a phrase which has a tendency to raise more than a few eyebrows. “You what? Internet of Things? Isn’t the internet already made up of things? You know, bits of data, and people arguing on Youtube, and websites…all that jazz”
The use of the rather ambiguous term “things” within that phrase seems to be a key stumbling block, afterall, “thing” being a word that we use to describe something as an object, device, or some other manifestation whether physical or otherwise, without actually, specifically describing what it is at all to any real extent whatever. It’s the complete absence of any precision or clarity.
The Internet of Things may be one of the clumsier buzz terms to come out in recent years but it seems to have caught on nonetheless. Originally coined by marketer Kevin Ashton as the title of a 1999 presentation for Procter & Gamble, the term “Internet of Things” has struck a chord with techies over the decade-and-a-half since its inception.
