Google Android IoT OS is out of beta – Business Insider

Google revealed at its annual I/O developer conference this week that it’s bringing its Android Things IoT operating system (OS) out of the beta testing phase, allowing all developers to use it for the first time, Engadget reports.

Android Things is a fully managed OS that enables customers to manage and design apps for their IoT projects through a software development kit (SDK). BI Intelligence

The search giant first unveiled the OS in late 2016 and made it available to select developers — mostly at manufacturing companies — shortly thereafter. The OS can operate on hardware devices with 32 megabytes or more random access memory (RAM), and developers can use the Java and Kotlin coding languages to program tasks for the OS. It can also connect to all of Google’s machine learning tools hosted in its core cloud service.

The search giant said Android Things is particularly well suited for industrial manufacturers, but it’s also targeting connected home developers. While manufacturers will likely be the primary early adopters of Android Things — largely because they were the primary beta testers of the OS — the OS will also probably catch on in the connected home space, as device makers are likely to be especially familiar with the Google brand via Nest.
