In his keynote speech at the 2018 London IP Summit, Ferrazzini said that some new actors working in areas such as artificial intelligence, the internet of things, and blockchain could cause litigation issues by selling their IP assets to companies with “more aggressive business models”.
Ferrazzini questioned whether these new technologies could require a “different approach to IP protection and understanding of the role IP protection plays in business”.
He referred to innovation as being “nakedly geopolitical … Where technologies are seen as solutions to grave societal problems, notably health and climate change, we are likely to see increased essential facility arguments and both hard and soft compulsory licensing.”
