IoT helps to tackle infrastructure corrosion – Smart Cities World
In the wider context, the project shows how digital enablement and sensors could make our infrastructure smarter
A university spin-out and a Scottish innovation centre are working on a project that uses sensors to detect corrosion hidden under insulation in the oil and gas, nuclear, renewables, and construction sectors.
In the oil and gas industry, the cost of monitoring so-called corrosion under insulation (CUI) in assets such as pipelines is estimated at around £3.5bn annually. It traditionally involves the periodic removal of insulation in selected areas to check visually for corrosion. This new approach will explore the use of remote sensors to monitor corrosion continually without the need to physically remove insulation.
