Google launched Google Cloud IoT Core on Tuesday, a cloud platform service designed to help enterprises more easily collect data from Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
The service will “securely connect globally distributed devices to the Google Cloud Platform where the data can be integrated with Google’s data analytics services” Indranil Chakraborty, cloud product manager at Google, told ComputerWorld.
NXP Semiconductor said it plans to support Google Cloud IoT Core in its Android Things platform, reports ZD Net.
IoT devices hold enormous potential for providing cities and businesses all types of data that can help them save money or run more efficiently. But many IoT devices use data protocols that require manual intervention before they are usable in other systems. Google says its new service can translate that data without manual intervention. If it works as promised, the new service could help cities and businesses more quickly realize the value of IoT technology.
The service comes at a good time. Businesses alone will drive $964 billion in IoT hardware sales in 2017, according to Gartner. Currently, Atlanta has some of the most connected devices per network in the U.S., according to a report from eero, a home Wi-Fi system provider, which aggregated and anonymized data from its networks in 10 major cities.
