Focus on marine economy helps Irish entrepreneurs ride the waves of change | Ireland | The Sunday Times
A mountaineering accident gave tech entrepreneur John Murphy an idea for a product that today saves hundreds of lives a year at sea. Murphy is joint chief executive of 8 West Consulting, a Cork-based software developer with 240 staff and clients such as the cosmetics brand Mac and the denim giant Levi’s. He is also an avid mountaineer.
In March 2010, he was 3,600m up Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, when a fellow climber, to whom he was attached with ropes, fell 200m onto an ice ledge, taking Murphy with him.
